NY City Basement Living

with 12 comments

*~*~*

KraftWork‘s offering for the quarterly subscription Builder’s Box is the “NY Basement Loft” Skybox. It’s unusual because as well as the superbly meshed interior which includes fireplace, candles and picture, there’s a small garden with steps leading to a tenement surround, just as if you were in the City and had made a good job of utilising every bit of space you could.

Here’s the skybox unfurnished.  It has a footprint of 12 by 23 metres which is big enough for some decent decorating so I went full steam ahead!

*~*~*

I just don’t think you could safely have the bathroom in full view but on the other hand you’d want to air it from time to time by opening the doors to the garden. So I screened it off with partial fretwork screens by Newchurch.   I suppose in real life you could also use that posh glass screening that you can make opaque via an electronic switch.   There’s a large, luxurious shower included here because there’s enough room for a bit of luxury

*~*~*

Just a bit of decorating for the garden and it features KraftWork’s group gift for August, the Puebla Chair which is a tribute to designer Nod’s architectural past.

“As some of you may know I am an architect in real life. The first job I was offered was from a Mexican architect that had long before moved from Puebla, Mexico to São Paulo during the 1960’s. His name was Aurelio Martinez Flores. His work was part of the modernism movement in Brazil that would give shape to generations of designers, including me. It was his ideas that became the foundation for the greatest Brazilian architects in modern times including Isay Weinfeld, Marcio Kogan and Mario Biselli.  This is a replica of  one of his few furniture designs he did and is a Second Life® tribute to a man who both inspired me and gave me, just 20 years ago, my first chance in life to chase a dream.”

*~*~*

The kitchen is small but contains all the essentials such as a good fridge, cooker and hob.  Lots of other industrial and brightly coloured décor adds to the usefulness.  I dare say that if you added more cupboards above the unit you’d get more kitchen paraphernalia in!  I just love that looped bulb by Seven Emporium complete with fittings, it’s the little things that add to the detailing and sense of home.

*~*~*

Here’s the dining area and this is a very cheerful dining table set by BaZar which will rez a number of meals with central decoration.  You can clear up afterwards with just one click, if only it were the same in real life! Multiple trips to the dishwasher and back, wiping the glass clean and rearranging the centrepiece. By the time you’ve finished – especially if you have to wash up without said dishwasher – you’re ready for the next meal to replenish the energy.

*~*~*

Now I thought the best thing to do about the bedroom was to use some sort of a hanging bed or loft bed so that you could have a study area underneath with your computer at the ready.  Fortunately, Goose supplied this great hanging bed which I modified to match the bright colours of the basement.  But can you live with only one wardrobe and one chest of drawers?  I’m sure I couldn’t, at home I’ve got 2 large wardrobes and 3 chest of drawers I’m ashamed to say, and that doesn’t count what I’ve got in the airing cupboard and stored in the attic *laughs*.  The Seven Emporium sign says L O V E and like all good things to do with that activity, you need to turn it on!

*~*~*

The lounge is my top picture but here’s another just to show you the view from the garden door.  Click on any of the four doors and they will individually open and close.  A nice snuggly double set of sofas from Duvet Day, set the bright colour in this otherwise neutral loft.  All the remains for me to say is… would you like to live here?

“Our love is like a ship on the ocean
We’ve been sailing with a cargo full of love and devotion
So I’d like to know where, you got the notion
To rock the boat, Baby” ~ The Hues Corporation ~

There’s lots of symbols in this picture, see if you can spot them all!  I was inspired by the latest gacha from Lucas Lameth at The Crossroads Event, and for very few Plays I managed to get a couple of the hand holding a heart sculptures which are beautifully made and rather symbolic in themselves.  Then there was Fancy Decor’s sailing ship, one of my favourites piece of décor by designer, Jake.  Into my brain came the vintage song, “Rock the Boat” and I was off building up the scene.

The majority of the furniture is from a stunning set by Newchurch called “Shen”.

Art Deco Lounge

*~*~*

Art Deco is and was an international design movement, started in 1925. To say that it ended in the 1940s is quite untrue as it’s still being used today in the world of interior design but it was most popular in the 1930s.  The style itself reflected modern technology at the time and was characterised by smooth lines, geometric shapes, forms that were streamlined and bright with the occasional garish colour. Initially, it was a luxury style and a reaction against the austerity of the first World War and used expensive materials like silver, crystal, jade and lacquer. Later on it used cheaper, mass produced materials like chrome, plastics and other industrial items that catered to the growing middle class taste for a design style that was elegant, glamorous and functional.

When I received the “Luxurious Woodburning Stove” from Chez Moi Furnitures showing at the Tres Chic Event, I rezzed it and immediately thought – Art Deco!  This led onto a whole room based on that fireplace, so as a consequence it took a bit of time to get the look right.

One of the major décor treatments for rooms in the Art Deco period was wall panels. These could be simple, expressing geometric shapes, right through to filled in and decorated panels which were as ornate as the furniture that was put in the rooms. To get this effect I made simple shapes from prims to get the skirting board, panels and shelves – it’s a quick and easy way to change a plain wall into something more period. For the room, I used the beautiful “Flatiron Loft Studio Skybox” from ::Newchurch::  which has these amazing arched windows. See the Windlight effects you can get with these windows and you’ll know what I mean! The Flatiron skybox was inspired by the industrial lofts that you get in many cities which have been converted into apartments. The other end to where I’m standing has a small room with arched window and more conventional ceiling, and I used that for the Art Deco room.

Close up of that amazing “Cactus Bowl Terrarium” from ::Newchurch::, it’s part of a gacha featuring other terrariums. I find the miniature world fascinating so anything like that is a must have for decorating.

To show off a couple of the poses for the Woodburning Stove, we dressed as near to 1930s casual as we could and choose an evening Windlight. As it’s freezing in the UK at the moment, the warmth that the stove conveys, even virtually, was welcome! It has a whole barrage of particle effects and sounds to make it like a natural log fire. If you can get a photo at just the right time, then the glow looks really good.

Wouldn’t you want to laze around in front of a cosy fire? Especially with that nice set of drinks – Art Deco style – by The Loft. It’s part of a whole cocktails set including industrial style trolley. The metal can be changed to gold, silver or black, according to your decorating needs.
