Fireside Ferrets

with 11 comments

*~*~*

I couldn’t not decorate this amazing lounge room with picture window in the Laurel Ridge log cabin by Galland Homes.  Beautiful fireplace, too, just lends itself to cosy nights and days in.

Other items are my favourites from 6º Republic, Canada section.  MudHoney had the best sofa set with lots of texture versions, the picture shows the stone texture one.  All the cushions/pillows and the throw/blanket are individually texture changeable (say that quickly) so should satisfy the most discerning of decorators. Those cute ferrets are by Serenity Style, and they are in a gacha – there’s lots of them.  CONSTRUCT’s cuddle rug in front of the blazing fire has lots of languid and delicious poses and also includes a folded up version, a great idea for décor, I haven’t seen that done before.

What I’d like to do now is to translate the virtual picture into reality and spend the rest of the day stuffed up the fire with only ferrets bouncing around to disturb my solace.  Some hope!

The Messy Man Cave

with 5 comments

Because we can all admit… that if it didn’t start messy, it sure ended up that way!

I’ve got two stunning pieces from KraftWork in the picture, the Murphy Bed and Le Plateau skybox.  Le Plateau is currently at the 6º Republic Event, and it’s in the Canada section.

I cornered designer, Nod, and asked her why KraftWork chose to represent Canada this time.  She said, “We never thought about doing Tokyo as 6º Republic has many Japanese designers which are so good in it, we would never make something better than they do already. So our choice was Canada and with that, comes snow.  Our first option was an Ice Hotel but ice textures can never be translated well in SL, the transparency etc. We made tests and we didn’t like it.  I had this loft saved for a while on my computer, I basically love the window, and this rustic, dirty chic – people love it in SL®.  So it was a combination of factors :)”

A superb skybox, the Le Plateau Loft pays tribute to the district of Le Plateau, a multicultural, dynamic and storied section of Montreal, Quebec. Once a thriving working class neighbourhood, it has been transformed into a Bohemian artist enclave with galleries, cafes and lofts that border McGill University.

*~*~*

Here’s the shelving unit with ladder, it’s right next to the window seat.  Great Industrial styling here.

*~*~*

And that fabulous Murphy bed?  Well you can either have it all folded up as in the picture below, or one click and the bed section gracefully descends to a usable position.  And talking of usable positions, pick the right maturity and you can have any number of those!  Details follow.  You’ll have to wait until Friday, though, that’s when the new edition of Man Cave starts.

Shake, Rattle and Roll!

with 6 comments

“I said Shake, rattle and roll
I said Shake, rattle and roll
Well, you never do nothin’ to save your doggone soul” ~ Bill Haley & The Comets

The combination of a great new skybox from FOURTH WALL and JIAN’s daft Great Dane puppies were just too good to miss!  The inspiration for the monochrome skybox is a stormy day in Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik. You’ve got storm effects and particle rain falling outside the skybox but inside is nice and cosy.  Also featuring a brilliant new gacha from [ zerkalo ], which has a musical theme with lots of useful décor pieces. Well worth a spin on that.

*~*~*

Here’s  some pictures of the skybox.  There’s a couple of levels with floating stairs up to the platform. Part of the floor dips down with a couple of steps which might be a nice place for a snug, and there’s already a kitchen island to start off your decorating there.  The platform’s rails are made of glass and look very smart.

Here, I managed to catch a lightening flash from the storm, and you can see the icy mountains in the far distance from the top floor platform. It’s rather spectacular and really not all that dark as you’d expect.  There’s also a monochrome version of the  skybox without the storm effects.

The floating stairs which lead to the platform.  The back wall is a comforting darker tone and you’re just on the edge of where the floor dips down a couple of steps.

The top of the Newchurch Thompson Industrial Cabinet, those long glass doors will slide right and left upon touch, to give a number of décor effects.  Beautiful texturing here, and the same can be said of Fancy Decor’s Creepy Canisters – they look good as a set don’t they?  It’d be fun to keep biscuits in them and hand them out to Trick ‘n Treaters back in First Life, kids love that sort of thing.  Imagine Beetle Biscuits – cookies with raisins in them 🙂

Part of the Soy. Corner sofa which is texture change and an unusual shape, and the Zen Creations Japanese Tea set which I adore. The kettle is texture change for a number of grey based designs in stoneware and you can set it to steam gently or steam madly – my culinary sense of humour is satisfied with that.

22769’s wares for INDUSTRIE (an Industrial Bench and Wine Rack) a new event well worth taking a look at.  I discovered a new designer there that I hadn’t come across before – Silence – picked up a couple of really good pieces from them, they have a decent set which includes both furniture and décor.  I’m really loving [ zerkalo ]’s neon pieces which have turned up in various gacha recently.  They make excellent decorations for Modern and Industrial styling.

NY City Basement Living

with 12 comments

*~*~*

KraftWork‘s offering for the quarterly subscription Builder’s Box is the “NY Basement Loft” Skybox. It’s unusual because as well as the superbly meshed interior which includes fireplace, candles and picture, there’s a small garden with steps leading to a tenement surround, just as if you were in the City and had made a good job of utilising every bit of space you could.

Here’s the skybox unfurnished.  It has a footprint of 12 by 23 metres which is big enough for some decent decorating so I went full steam ahead!

*~*~*

I just don’t think you could safely have the bathroom in full view but on the other hand you’d want to air it from time to time by opening the doors to the garden. So I screened it off with partial fretwork screens by Newchurch.   I suppose in real life you could also use that posh glass screening that you can make opaque via an electronic switch.   There’s a large, luxurious shower included here because there’s enough room for a bit of luxury

*~*~*

Just a bit of decorating for the garden and it features KraftWork’s group gift for August, the Puebla Chair which is a tribute to designer Nod’s architectural past.

“As some of you may know I am an architect in real life. The first job I was offered was from a Mexican architect that had long before moved from Puebla, Mexico to São Paulo during the 1960’s. His name was Aurelio Martinez Flores. His work was part of the modernism movement in Brazil that would give shape to generations of designers, including me. It was his ideas that became the foundation for the greatest Brazilian architects in modern times including Isay Weinfeld, Marcio Kogan and Mario Biselli.  This is a replica of  one of his few furniture designs he did and is a Second Life® tribute to a man who both inspired me and gave me, just 20 years ago, my first chance in life to chase a dream.”

*~*~*

The kitchen is small but contains all the essentials such as a good fridge, cooker and hob.  Lots of other industrial and brightly coloured décor adds to the usefulness.  I dare say that if you added more cupboards above the unit you’d get more kitchen paraphernalia in!  I just love that looped bulb by Seven Emporium complete with fittings, it’s the little things that add to the detailing and sense of home.

*~*~*

Here’s the dining area and this is a very cheerful dining table set by BaZar which will rez a number of meals with central decoration.  You can clear up afterwards with just one click, if only it were the same in real life! Multiple trips to the dishwasher and back, wiping the glass clean and rearranging the centrepiece. By the time you’ve finished – especially if you have to wash up without said dishwasher – you’re ready for the next meal to replenish the energy.

*~*~*

Now I thought the best thing to do about the bedroom was to use some sort of a hanging bed or loft bed so that you could have a study area underneath with your computer at the ready.  Fortunately, Goose supplied this great hanging bed which I modified to match the bright colours of the basement.  But can you live with only one wardrobe and one chest of drawers?  I’m sure I couldn’t, at home I’ve got 2 large wardrobes and 3 chest of drawers I’m ashamed to say, and that doesn’t count what I’ve got in the airing cupboard and stored in the attic *laughs*.  The Seven Emporium sign says L O V E and like all good things to do with that activity, you need to turn it on!

*~*~*

The lounge is my top picture but here’s another just to show you the view from the garden door.  Click on any of the four doors and they will individually open and close.  A nice snuggly double set of sofas from Duvet Day, set the bright colour in this otherwise neutral loft.  All the remains for me to say is… would you like to live here?

*~*~*

Here’s the Home & Garden products I used in detail:-

“Our love is like a ship on the ocean
We’ve been sailing with a cargo full of love and devotion
So I’d like to know where, you got the notion
To rock the boat, Baby” ~ The Hues Corporation ~

There’s lots of symbols in this picture, see if you can spot them all!  I was inspired by the latest gacha from Lucas Lameth at The Crossroads Event, and for very few Plays I managed to get a couple of the hand holding a heart sculptures which are beautifully made and rather symbolic in themselves.  Then there was Fancy Decor’s sailing ship, one of my favourites piece of décor by designer, Jake.  Into my brain came the vintage song, “Rock the Boat” and I was off building up the scene.

The majority of the furniture is from a stunning set by Newchurch called “Shen”.

Art Deco Lounge

with 6 comments

art-deco-lounge

*~*~*

Art Deco is and was an international design movement, started in 1925. To say that it ended in the 1940s is quite untrue as it’s still being used today in the world of interior design but it was most popular in the 1930s.  The style itself reflected modern technology at the time and was characterised by smooth lines, geometric shapes, forms that were streamlined and bright with the occasional garish colour. Initially, it was a luxury style and a reaction against the austerity of the first World War and used expensive materials like silver, crystal, jade and lacquer. Later on it used cheaper, mass produced materials like chrome, plastics and other industrial items that catered to the growing middle class taste for a design style that was elegant, glamorous and functional.

When I received the “Luxurious Woodburning Stove” from Chez Moi Furnitures showing at the Tres Chic Event, I rezzed it and immediately thought – Art Deco!  This led onto a whole room based on that fireplace, so as a consequence it took a bit of time to get the look right.

art-deco-lounge-close-up

One of the major décor treatments for rooms in the Art Deco period was wall panels. These could be simple, expressing geometric shapes, right through to filled in and decorated panels which were as ornate as the furniture that was put in the rooms. To get this effect I made simple shapes from prims to get the skirting board, panels and shelves – it’s a quick and easy way to change a plain wall into something more period. For the room, I used the beautiful “Flatiron Loft Studio Skybox” from ::Newchurch::  which has these amazing arched windows. See the Windlight effects you can get with these windows and you’ll know what I mean! The Flatiron skybox was inspired by the industrial lofts that you get in many cities which have been converted into apartments. The other end to where I’m standing has a small room with arched window and more conventional ceiling, and I used that for the Art Deco room.

~*~*~

Close up of that amazing “Cactus Bowl Terrarium” from ::Newchurch::, it’s part of a gacha featuring other terrariums. I find the miniature world fascinating so anything like that is a must have for decorating.

newchurch-cactus-bowl-terrarium

~*~*~

To show off a couple of the poses for the Woodburning Stove, we dressed as near to 1930s casual as we could and choose an evening Windlight. As it’s freezing in the UK at the moment, the warmth that the stove conveys, even virtually, was welcome! It has a whole barrage of particle effects and sounds to make it like a natural log fire. If you can get a photo at just the right time, then the glow looks really good.

Wouldn’t you want to laze around in front of a cosy fire? Especially with that nice set of drinks – Art Deco style – by The Loft. It’s part of a whole cocktails set including industrial style trolley. The metal can be changed to gold, silver or black, according to your decorating needs.
