Small but perfectly formed

with 13 comments

*~*~*

The “Stonehurst Redux” house by Galland Homes has a Land Impact of only 26 and it would  fit on a small plot. The floorplan  is beautifully thought out, with a spacious feel thanks to lots of tall windows, an outside balcony, compact internal staircase and open plan living.  Equally at home in the city or the countryside, it’s placed here within a town environment.

*~*~*

I thought it would be fun to furnish the Stonehurst and see how much I could get in.  It was quite a lot as you’ll see.  This is one side of the downstairs living area which is quite adequate to fit in a gorgeous retro compact kitchen from [tia] and minimalist dining set from Cheeky Pea.  The Chihuahua is there for size comparison, at least that’s his excuse waiting on the dining table for scraps!

*~*~*

Over to the opposite side and you can see the stairs going up to the first floor and a cosy lounge area furnished mostly by Revivial and MudHoney in typical Scandi style. There are a lot of windows which do give that indoors/outdoors feel but you could cover some of them with wooden blinds if you wanted to create more privacy in a particular area.

*~*~*

Upstairs now and I only furnished the far side of the first floor, you could fit in loads more. For instance,  a generous sized bed , small study area and small bathroom area behind room screens – they would all slot in easily.  I was really enjoying the two main textures of the walls – wood and stone – they compliment each other and give stability to a home which has a lot of ethereal glass.

The Scarlet Creative daybed (currently part of the Daisy gacha at June Arcade) is a little gem. All that style and work for a mere L$75 play of the machine, I think it was.  It is small (look at the Chihuahua on it) but like the Stonehurst house, it’s perfectly formed!

Here’s a close up on eTNIA‘s stunning retro Chinoiserie Vanity and Decor which is currently at the Vintage Fair and that Event runs to the end of the month. Ethnic and retro combine in this vanity set,  which isn’t always easy.  The Vase and Letters are extras from other designers. All the rest you get in eTNIA’s set and it’s reassuringly low prim.

Peachy Keen

with 5 comments

I was fiddling with Windlights again (dangerous, Moz) and came up with this extraordinary one which is a peach dawn as far as I’m concerned. I have seen peach dawns in the East, not so much in the UK, but any dawn on a clear day has the most wonderful feel to it. Birdsong is so lucid at that time of day and meditation, profound.

Very happy to display such beautiful furniture, some of it is time sensitive, however! There’s a couple of pieces here, one from Fancy Decor called the “Whiteout Bed” and one from HEXtraordinary called the “Silver Garland Chandelier” – both of those are specials for Fifty Linden Friday. The Fancy Decor bed will be available at the discounted price through to Sunday and there’s also a Blackout Bed in, yes you’ve guessed it, all black 🙂

Here’s the Home & Garden items in detail:-

The Naples – Galland Homes

with 7 comments

galland-homes-the-naples-italian-setting

This beautiful house called “The Naples” is an updated release from Galland Homes. It’s based on a luxurious Mediterranean Villa although it’s also quite typical to some of the homes you’ll find in parts of the gulf, south-west and eastern parts of Florida, US. As my mum is from Italy, I thought I’d style this house as if it were resting in the middle of the Italian countryside! The Windlight is as near to that area as I can get, it’s a brilliant light that softens towards dusk and casts a rosy glow over everything.

There are a couple of versions of Naples; one that has the clay tiled roof and a standard version with less roof detail which is 183 LI. A front walk and patio is provided as a separate piece and you can place it either way around for 2 looks. Inside, you walk through a porch or hallway to a large lounge with lots of space and windows. There’s also a den with judge’s panelling on the ground floor. Walk up a wooden flight of stairs to the main bedroom and smaller bedroom or it could be a bathroom. The side and back of the home has walk around lanais which are bordered by mesh balustrades and railings. I’ve shown the house from the front door side.

The house is textured to appear as built on a stone foundation, stucco, tile and wood floors, and neutral coloured plaster walls. This makes it versatile for a number of colour schemes. Naples is 25 metres wide and 22 metres deep and should fit on a 2048 sq metre piece of land or larger plots. If you add the patio and walkway then you need more space. Other features include a customizable security system and home control system. Permissions are Copy/Modify.

The house merits a walk around, but I just wanted to show you what could be done with some of the rooms.  Here’s the hallway or porch, the flight of wooden stairs leads to a picture window and landing. To the left of the picture you’d be entering the downstairs lounge. Note the riding boots, it’s a popular pastime to go riding!

The second bedroom has a post all to itself.  Here, I’m showing the main bedroom and balustrades, which I think is the nicest room in the house. Here’s a quiet corner, where the dog has dropped off to sleep.

This is a styling of the main bedroom where one of the doors to the balcony is propped open. Again, the dog knows the best places in the house to laze around! You can see I’ve been down The Arcade, and have been rather fortunate on the machines. I’m sure my mum would love this bedroom 🙂

Celestial Fisherman

A beautiful new bed from :: Newchurch :: gave me the idea for the scene. It’s called the “Celeste Tufted Bed” and is available at The Cosmopolitan Event for the next couple of weeks. I also had a Heron from │T│L│C│ Home Collection so I got this chap fishing during dusk.  Herons fish mostly at dawn and dusk and so they are rarely noticed in the garden. Each day, an adult heron needs about 13 ounces of food, which is the equivalent to three 6″  koi or ten 2″ goldfish and they take twice as much as this when they are feeding young. Young herons teach themselves to fish and when they leave the nest in June – July, small garden ponds are attractive to them because they provide easy fishing – little wotsits!  If you are wondering where your pond fish are disappearing to, the herons have probably taken them for supper. Although herons feed in water, they nest high in trees. The breeding colony is known as a heronry. A large number of birds can nest very close together in the treetops.

Back to the bed. Celeste has a Land Impact of 10 with Permissions of Copy/Modify. I love it because when you sit on the bed, the covers are removed and the sheets are shown. When you get up again, it’s instantly made. If only the same thing happened in real life!  There’s a texture change menu for 12 cheerful colours for the tufted portion and also the same for the bedding. Some great combinations are possible. Arrchie got a nice warm red tufting with cream sheets going on last night. Because the bed is Modify, you can also use the Edit tool to tint the existing colours a bit darker or lighter.  There’s some peaceful sleep poses – 10 in all, 24 poses for couples and in the Adult version you get a great menu of 34 intimate poses.  All animations are adjustable and there’s swap facility, too.

My Heron is fishing in a dish! Called, “My Little Pond Plate”, this is a Japanese designer I found recently called Maru Kado, who makes the most exquisite miniature things.

Here’s the rest of the Home & Garden items:-

MONS / 3D – Leaf Photoshoot Decor (spring) – a fascinating décor piece, there’s an autumn leaf display in the pack also.

Victorian Outbuilding – Galland Homes

with 5 comments

galland-homes-victorian-outbuilding-front-small

Today, I’m showcasing the “Victorian Outbuilding” by Galland Homes, which is available at the new round of Draftsman.  The Event’s theme is Victorian, which is a really interesting period of architecture, especially toward the end of Queen Victoria’s reign with the rise of the Arts & Crafts movement.  I’m going to include a bit of architectural history with regards to the United Kingdom.

The Victorian era of building took place during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837 – 1901). At this time the Institute of British Architects was formed in 1834. Before that time it was common for architects to act as developers and surveyors too, but by the 1820s such roles were being devolved, leaving architects free to experiment with a profusion of styles. Changes in the building world had a big impact on the looks of Victorian buildings. The arrival of the railways gave a wider reach so for example, Welsh slates largely replaced tiles in many part of Britain. Other technical developments included iron framed construction, plate glass, terracotta and polished granite, commercially available for the first time thanks to steam power.

galland-homes-victorian-outbuilding-inner-small

Most Victorian buildings were classical, although the style was used with greater flexibility and variety than ever before. In the middle of the century, however, classical styles were being fiercely challenged by the Gothic Revival.  It was regarded as the national style, which is why it was chosen for the design of the new Houses of Parliament after the old Palace of Westminster was destroyed by fire in 1834. It symbolised the traditional identity of Christianity, and thus became the preferred style for Anglican churches. It was also a style that encouraged architects to collaborate with artists and other designers to create sculpture, wall paintings and stained glass.

Partly because it had such unshakeable religious overtones, Gothic failed to become a universal style. Its emphasis on the architectural crafts had an important legacy, though, in the form of the Arts and Crafts movement, whose most famous proponent was William Morris, a trained architect. Arts and Crafts combined a strong interest in the Middle Ages and the revival of traditional crafts with a rejection of many of the technological innovations that had made mid-Victorian architecture so distinctive. The impact of Arts and Crafts designers was felt largely in houses of modest size. Despite the international interest in the Arts and Crafts movement, it was just one strand in the varied architectural landscape of late Victorian England. Across the country local pride transformed towns and cities with new town halls, libraries, museums, concert halls and schools, built in Gothic, neoclassical and Italianate styles. This was a golden age of civic as well as church architecture.

This is a stunning outbuilding by Galland Homes, and to do it justice I placed it in a Victorian styled brick walled garden. The Land Impact is 28 with Permissions of Copy/Modify. It has a lot of  decorating possibilities as there’s a goodly amount of space inside, here I was thinking of the Victorian love of plants and tea time!  If possible, try to match up the brickwork with your garden walls to really celebrate the style.

Of Coffers, Mules and Drawers

with 15 comments

galland-homes-classic-sideboard-dresser-lost-n-found

*~*~*

A beautiful new release from Galland Homes, this is the “Classic Sideboard/Dresser” which comes in a Holiday version with runner, candles and ornaments plus a version of the sideboard on its own.  Land Impact is 4 for the sideboard, candles are 3 LI each,  and the ornament group is 5 LI. Pieces are Copy/Modify so you can have more candles and alter the runner and candlesticks to a colour of your choice by tinting.  The candles have a warm glow to them with a good spread of light. Materials have been enabled for both versions. Pick up a copy from the current round of the Lost & Found Event, it’s only 125L$ for the duration of the Event (closes December 1st).

As this is Galland Homes and I like to include a bit of history about the piece in question, here’s a potted version of the evolution of furniture with drawers!

*~*~*

The Chest of Drawers as we know it today first appeared in the 17th century, about the 1690s. It had developed over time from Coffers. These were first efforts to make pieces of furniture that offered some comfort in the home. A Coffer is a long, deep box which is raised off the ground with either legs or feet. It has a lift up lid and is a bit like a modern blanket box. They were secure places for weapons, food larders and places to keep clothing clean and dry.

Coffers often had large grab handles on each side for easy transportation. In troubled times, when a person might need to up and leave at short notice – as an invading army or raiders were closing in, for instance – they would chuck all their valuables into their Coffer and off they could go running for the hills and safety with all their worldly goods in one place.

Some Coffers even acted as vaults or banks. For example, in the 12th century Henry II ordered that plain, planked Coffer chests should be placed in all churches for cash contributions for the relief of the Holy Land.

Later on, furniture makers began to add a drawer to the bottom of the Coffer, to keep things within easy reach. These were called Mule Chests and became very popular as folks realised they’d been losing items in the bottom of their Coffers for years – so the extra drawer was practical. It didn’t take long for the whole of the carcass to be filled with drawers and the lift up lid to be dispensed with. Chest of drawers haven’t really been altered or improved much since then, and have become an essential item of home furniture.

The evolution of American Barns – Galland Homes

with 7 comments

galland-homes-hanover-barn

Galland Homes new release is the “Hanover Barn”, a half timbered barn with brick infill. It’s beautifully spacious and quite large, the footprint is 17 m by 23 m and the barn has a Land Impact of 73. You can pick up a copy at the premier round of the Draftsman Event, for the event price of L$495.

The mesh has a really good level of detail, there are double doors on both sides which open independently of each other. and there’s a further door at the front. Step inside to appreciate the warm of the wood with the high rafters and light filtering in through the high-up small windows. The size of the Hanover barn gives real feeling of space, you can almost see the dust motes circulating in the air. In this picture, the sheep have taken over!

galland-homes-hanover-barn-inside-1

If you didn’t use this barn for agricultural use, it could also be used as a home. Why not do your own virtual barn conversion?  It’s certainly big enough.

In the United States, barns were originally timber built from local supplies and built as a log crib barn or timber frame, although stone was added in areas where it was a cheaper building material. Later on, during the mid to late 19th century barn framing methods gave way to truss/plank framed buildings. This reduced the number of timbers, dimensional lumber was used for the rafters, joists and sometimes the trusses. The joints gradually shifted from being mortised and tenoned to being bolted or nailed.

galland-homes-hanover-barn-side-elevation

Mechanization on the farm, better transportation infrastructure, and new technology like a hay fork mounted on a track contributed to a need for larger, more open barns. Saw mills using steam power could produce smaller, more affordable pieces of lumber  and machine cut nails were much less expensive than hand wrought nails. Concrete block began to be used for barns in the early 20th century although modern barns are more typically steel building.

galland-homes-hanover-barn-rafters

In older style North American barns, the upper area was used to store hay and sometimes grain. This is called the mow (rhymes with cow) or the hayloft. A large door at the top of the ends of the barn could be opened up so that hay could be put in the loft. The hay was hoisted into the barn by a system containing pulleys and a trolley that ran along a track attached to the top ridge of the barn. Trap doors in the floor allowed animal feed to be dropped into the mangers for the animals.

In New England it is common to find barns attached to the main farmhouse, allowing for chores to be done while sheltering the worker from the weather.

galland-homes-hanover-barn-inside-2

The Hanover barn also has a snow top roof extra, for those winter scenes. It’s really easy to fit. Just line up with the X and Y axes of the barn and use the Z axis to place on the tiled roof. The barn has a rez box which you click on to rez the barn, and then use Edit to move that box, the barn will move with it.  You can then freeze the barn where you want it or derez if you want to try again.
