Shades of Lilac

with 6 comments

My object today was to create a peaceful room based on the colour white, so most of the products here are actually white. However, after I’d fiddled around with various Windlight settings I came up with this beautiful lilac wash which is rather pleasing and calm and created the atmosphere I was after.

The scene is set on the ground floor of Galland Homes “Cape Hatteras” and the light on the floor is reflected from the mass of windows at the front.  I think this is one of my favourite virtual homes of all time because not only do you get airy upper balconies and a comfortable porch back and front on the ground floor, but the amount of windows overall is nigh on perfect for calm and light within the house. The flooring is equally pleasing with a good mix of tiling and wooden floorboards. Cape Hatteras back in RL is the name of a thin, broken  strand of islands off the coast of North Carolina which have a humid, subtropical climate and can be rather turbulent and subject to storm damage. No doubt Designer Rob Galland got his inspiration from the sort of colonial homes that would manage well in that weather.

I’m also featuring a posh new glass console set by Fancy Decor which includes pictures and you’ll find at Collabor88, a stunning fireplace and mirror set in three colour options by unKindness at April FaMESHed and a beautiful daybed set with matching chamomile accessories by Granola. and that’s also at FaMESHed.

There’s an interesting tale about the origin of lilacs and it’s from Greek mythology.  It revolves around the God Pan, the lord of forests and fields, and at one time he was madly in love with a nymph named Syringa. Pan could be rather an overwhelming God and one day he chased after Syringa through the forest quite frightening her.  To disguise herself, she turned into a lilac shrub. To Pan’s surprise, he could not find Syringa on that occasion, but he did find the shrub. Because a lilac shrub consists of hollow reeds, he cut the reeds and created the first pan pipe. The scientific name for lilac is Syringa vulgaris, and the name is derived from the Greek word “syrinks” which means pipe.

Lilac meanings vary throughout different cultures and time periods.

  • The Celts regarded the lilac as “magical” due to its incredibly intoxicating fragrance.
  • During the Victorian Age, the giving of a lilac was meant to be a reminder of an old love. In fact, widows were often seen wearing lilacs during this period.
  • In Russia, holding a sprig of lilac over the newborn would bring wisdom.
  • In the United States, the lilac is the official state flower of New Hampshire and represents the ‘hardy’ nature of its people.
